The country’s highest civilian honour after the Bharat Ratna–the Padma Vibhushan was given to three people. Renowned Assamese singer-composer Dr Bhupendra Kumar Hazarika was given the award posthumously along with former Uttar Pradesh governor and Intelligence Bureau chief T V Rajeswar and internationally acclaimed orthopedic surgeon Dr K H Sancheti.
President Patil bestowed 55 awards on Thursday. All except two of the awardees were present. Padma Bhushan was given to artist Jatin Das, sculptor Anish Kapoor, director Mira Nair, former India ambassador Ronen Sen and cardiac surgeon Dr Devi Prasad Shetty. Others who received the much-coveted award included Dr S H Advani, Prof S M Chitre, Khaled Choudhury, Buddhadev Das Gupta, Vidya Dehejia, Dr T V Gopalakrishnan, Sunil Janah, Prof S B Majumdar, Prof Arvind Panagariya and M V Subbiah.
Padma Shri was given to 36 people for distinguished service in public affairs, social work, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, education, sports and civil service. Among the awardees were Ajeet Bajaj, Dr Mukesh Batra, Priya Paul, Joy Michael, Motill Kemmu, Geeta Dharamrajan, Jhulan Goswami and Devendra Jhajhria.
